Atlanta, July 22, 2024. Regarding the recent publication of articles referencing the archives of Pope Pius XII which were opened in 2020, some of which concern Father Marcial Maciel, we know that the information about Maciel’s double life is true.
The information published in the archives is consistent with what we already know, including the reasons why the Holy See removed Marcial Maciel from the government of the Congregation in 1956 and carried out two investigations (apostolic visits). This information was previously published on the internet in 2012 by unofficial sources.
The Legionaries of Christ continue to affirm our commitment and desire to bring to light any revelation about our past that allows us to know and be able to live in the truth about our history. We thank the Holy See for opening these archives and for providing the possibility to access them.
